Writing Residencies

Twenty-first century societies find themselves faced with a multitude of societal and ecological crises: the COVID-19 pandemic, wars, floods, draughts, racism, sexism, mental and physical health challenges, social injustice, and many more. Education systems around the world need to respond to these challenges because education has the power to address them.

The Salzburg Global Center for Education Transformation puts education transformation at the forefront to address these challenges. Its systems transformation efforts focus on developing new approaches to critical and emerging issues, including social, emotional and creative skills, psycho-social support and wellbeing, ecological education, language of instruction and education leadership. In line with Salzburg Global Seminar’s mission, we challenge current and future leaders to shape a better world where every learner can thrive and fulfill their full potential.

At the Center for Education Transformation, we believe developing and sharing new thinking is crucial in working towards that mission. The Center offers three writing residencies per year to thought leaders and educationalists working to advance the agenda of education transformation. Our inspiring home at Schloss Leopoldskron allows people from across the globe to work in a new environment, away from the restrictions and pressures of their everyday lives. It provides the time and space for individuals to develop their work and creatively explore new ideas.

This residency offers:

  • Residential stay at Schloss Leopoldskron for up to three weeks, including meals
  • Travel to and from Salzburg
  • Use and access to the Max Reinhardt Library and other facilities at Schloss Leopoldskron
  • Participation in Salzburg Global Seminar programs during the residency, if relevant
  • Connections to partners, the local community, and our wider Salzburg Global Fellowship of more than 40,000 members
